EPDM Rubber (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)

　　EPDM rubber is a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene, and a non-conjugated diene.

　　Commercial production began in 1963. Worldwide annual consumption is 800,000 tons. Its main characteristics are superior resistance to oxidation, ozone, and erosion. As EPDM belongs to the polyolefin family, it has excellent vulcanization characteristics. Among all rubbers, EPDM has an extremely low specific gravity. It can absorb large amounts of fillers and oils with little effect on its properties. Therefore, low-cost rubber compounds can be produced.

Molecular Structure and Characteristics:

　　It has excellent aging resistance. Because its main chain consists of chemically stable saturated hydrocarbons and only contains unsaturated double bonds in the side chains, it possesses outstanding aging resistance to ozone, heat, and weather. It has good chemical corrosion resistance. The main polymer chain of EPDM is completely saturated, giving it resistance to heat, light, oxygen, and especially ozone. EPDM is essentially non-polar, offering resistance to polar solutions and chemicals, low water absorption, and good insulation properties. It has high mechanical strength, good heat resistance, cold resistance, and mechanical strength. It is widely used in automotive parts, building waterproofing materials, wire and cable sheathing, and other fields.
